Castillo de Feliciana Vineyard and Winery is located just south of Walla Walla on 66 acres. As we are "Work in progress" we can only paint for you a visual picture of what you can expect to find when we are completed.
Feliciana was the chosen name as it is also a blend: "Feliz" means happiness, and also memorializes Deborah's Aunt Feliciana, of whom she has many sweet and vivid childhood memories. The images of a Castillian dancer or Spanish Fado singer will be the centerpiece of the wine label, evoking the mystery, color and enchantment of Spain.
Our tasting room and processing facility will take you to the Southern region of Spain where white stucco building walls are contrasted with Terra cotta tile roofs. The structure will occupy a picture postcard setting with the picturesque Blue Mountains to the south and our estate vineyard surrounding the tasting room to the North.
Inside our tasting room we plan to capture the ambience of true spanish architecture bringing into play the rich colors and textures of what one would typically find in the southern region of Spain.
Plans are under way for planting our vineyard in the spring of 2009. We will be planting approximately 10 of the 25 acres selected for vineyard. Our goal is to plant several varieties of grapes one of which is called Temprenillo a very popular varietal coming from Spain. This summer the soil will be amended with the proper nutrients so that when spring comes it will welcome the grape stocks with lots of energy to produce healthy and vibrant plants. Drip Irrigation will be utilized to water the new plants. The majority of the vineyard will be sloping to the south in a direction that will allow maximum exposure to the suns rays. Grapes must obtain even sunshine throught the day to ripen evenly.
Once the vineyard is planted the challange becomes training the vines to produce excellent grapes for vintages to come. At Castillo de Feliciana Vineyard and winery we will embrace this time honored challenge.
